01 · What is this?

What is Real Yield, and how does it differ from the common notion of "high APY"?

Most people looking at Stablecoin yield opportunities instinctively check whether the annual percentage yield (APY) number is high, but that number alone doesn't tell you "where the money comes from." Say a Perpetual Futures DEX earns $1 million in trading fees this week and distributes $700K of it to stakers in ETH — that $700K is real yield, because it comes from cash flow generated by genuine user trading activity. But if the same protocol, regardless of how much fee revenue it actually earns, always mints $700K worth of its own Governance Token to distribute to stakers, that's "subsidized yield" (also called inflationary yield), because that money wasn't earned — it was printed.

The difference from "high APY": APY only tells you the return rate number, not the nature of the money behind that number. Two products both showing 20% APY could be entirely different — one might be real yield, sustainable; the other might be propped up entirely by Token emissions, and once the token's price falls, that "yield's" dollar value collapses right along with it. This is exactly what happened with Anchor Protocol in the Terra ecosystem in 2022 — it offered roughly 20% on UST deposits for a long stretch, until the subsidy mechanism couldn't hold anymore.

02 · Why does it exist?

Why did the concept of Real Yield get specifically called out for discussion, and what problem does it solve?

The term "real yield" started seeing widespread use in late 2022, after multiple "DeFi 2.0" tokens collapsed — at the time, many protocols offered annual yields above 1000%, entirely propped up by minting more of their own Governance Token. As Token prices fell, those yields' dollar value collapsed right along with them, wiping out large numbers of participants. That wave of collapses made the market realize: simply looking at how high or low an APY number is tells you nothing about whether that yield is sustainable — a framework was needed to distinguish "money that was earned" from "money that was printed."

The concept of real yield fills exactly this gap in judgment framework: it offers one simple but critical question — does this yield being distributed to me come from the protocol's actual revenue (fees, spreads, genuine trading activity), or from tokens the protocol prints? If the former, sustainability depends on whether the protocol's future revenue-generating ability stays stable; if the latter, the yield is essentially a subsidy — one that will eventually run out or dilute the token into worthlessness. This framework lets users ask the right question before depositing funds, instead of deciding to invest purely based on a return-rate number.

03 · How does it affect your decisions?

In practice, how do you determine whether a Stablecoin yield is Real Yield — are there concrete checks?

The first step is finding the protocol's actual revenue figures: most DeFi protocols' fee income can be looked up on on-chain data tracking platforms (like DeFiLlama's Fees dashboard or Token Terminal). Compare that figure against the total yield the protocol actually distributes to depositors or stakers — if the distributed yield amount is far higher than the protocol's actual fee revenue, the gap in between very likely comes from token emissions, which is the most direct way to check.

The second step is checking what asset the yield is paid in: if yield is paid in an asset the protocol genuinely earns (like ETH or USDC — "other people's money"), that usually indicates real yield; if yield is paid in the protocol's own Governance Token, you need to dig further and ask whether that token's value itself has real support, or whether it's purely being propped up by market sentiment. The third step is checking whether the APY is noticeably higher than the average for that market category — for instance, in stablecoin lending markets, most protocols generally sit in the 3–8% range; if one protocol shows over 30%, that usually indicates Leverage amplification, token subsidies, or the market pricing in some inadequately-priced tail risk behind it — none of these three simply mean "this protocol is just better at making money."

04 · What should you do?

What's the practical benefit for an ordinary user of understanding the Real Yield framework?

The most direct benefit is avoiding the "high APY trap" — when you see a Stablecoin-related product displaying an unusually attractive annual yield, asking "where does this money come from" before asking "how do I deposit" helps you filter out most unsustainable subsidized yield before committing funds. This doesn't mean subsidized yield should never be touched — early protocols using Token subsidies to attract liquidity is a common growth strategy — but you should at least clearly know whether what you're receiving is "a genuine share of the protocol's profits" or "a marketing subsidy paid for by diluting the protocol's future token value," since the two carry fundamentally different risk profiles.

The second benefit is helping with portfolio-level risk diversification: if all your Stablecoin Yield positions concentrate in subsidized-yield products, your overall return could collapse simultaneously once market sentiment sours and token prices fall; if you deliberately mix real yield with subsidized yield, even if the latter runs into trouble, the former can still provide a relatively stable base return. This diversification mindset is exactly the practical application that extends from the "real yield" judgment framework.

Anchor Protocol in Terra's ecosystem, during 2022, offered a fixed roughly-20% annual yield to users depositing UST for an extended period — a rate far higher than what the actual UST lending market's interest spread could generate at the time. The gap was subsidized by a reserve fund Terraform Labs had established, and as deposit scale kept growing, the subsidy reserve depleted far faster than it could be replenished. Ultimately, during UST's depeg collapse in May 2022, that "yield" went to zero along with the entire ecosystem, and the episode has been widely cited since as the representative case of unsustainable subsidized yield.
